There is something charming, minimal yet cheeky about the ceramic creations of South African label, Sootcookie. Familiar but with a twist on the play to juxtapose materiality with function. Back in 1975, Dutch ceramist Rob Brandt designed the ‘Crushed Cup,’ the plastic coffee cup inspired ceramic cup series.

In a similar vein, and with a bit of tongue and cheek, Sootcookie’s founder and ceramist, Tanya Laing has created her braai-ware series. Items typically mass produced and designed to be throw-away transmutate to become re-usable and precious.

The current collection aside from tableware includes small miffy-like sculptures, the ‘sootcookie animals’ as well as various objet d’arts to decorate the modern home. The ‘hamba kahle’ monogramed car sculpture is particularly funny, a little nod to the phrase to burn rubber we assume since it does mean ‘good bye’ in Zulu.

*Braai means barbecue in Afrikaans.
