Featured | Saïdou Dicko | Snap Judgements

When you have found yourself judged for your appearance, relegated to a periphery for not meeting some standard it is often brutal and dehumanising.  When difference operates like a centrifugal force that pulls apart, it needs a counter, a means to return us to the center. To be reminded of the universal, that we are all made of flesh and bone.

Saïdou Dicko is an artist, a poetic writer of visual short stories. His images defy the categories of race, class, orientation, creed, wealth, intelligence, beauty, insider and outsider. Dicko intentionally challenges the notion of ‘other’ by casting each character in the same light, one that is without prejudice –  through shadows. Can you tell who is the immigrant or citizen, the Christian or Muslim, the school educated or  self-made, the queen or the athlete?

 About

Saïdou Dicko  (b. 1979 Deou, Burkina Faso) is an artist that lives and works in Paris, France. From an early age, whilst herding sheep in the Sahel he learnt to draw inspired by the shadows cast by the sheep on the desert landscape.  In 2005, after twenty years of painting, the self-taught artist moved into the mediums of photography and film-making continuing his exploration of shadows. His shadow images first shown at Dak’Art OFF in 2006 led him to receive the “best promising new artist” award given by Foundation Blachère. In 2007, Le Voleur D’Ombre (The Shadow Thief), a photographic monography featuring the shadows immortalised by Dicko was published by Editions Africalia & Roularta Books. Through painting, photography or video, Dicko transforms the representation of forms giving life to visual phenomena, the physical and psychological events of light. He is represented by ARTCO Art Gallery (Germany) and Green Art Flowers Gallery (Boulogne).
